Social Media: INFLUENCE

Social media has changed the world that we live in. From just 10 years ago to now, the landscape of the world and information availability is entirely different – beauty gurus, instacelebs, Twitter warriors etc, are all changing the flow of information that we receive on the daily.

Social media has had a big influence in the world of cosmetics, sometimes for the good and sometimes for the bad. There are countless channels and avenues to teach makeup, do look-books and to shape the way that we apply makeup and see the world of cosmetics. The biggest positive influence has been in the application and exposing of brands that do no have an inclusive ethos when catering to the market – after which many changes, although not enough, have been seen in the cosmetics industry for the inclusion of people of colour.

With the good comes the bad, and affiliate codes, views and sponsorships have changed the way that influencers do their makeup, fashion and show their preference. Products are being “sold” to everyone that may very well not be the best product but the product that can generate more income for them personally. Techniques are being used, which includes products to buy, that are not always needed or appropriate – but they are being sold as gold because those products need to go off the shelf. Of course, not all the influencers are doing it negatively or for their own pure personal gain, it is difficult to find the diamonds in the rough.

Social media is a fantastic place, giving people the ability to generate income while doing what they love. The power to influence the market and viewers is a great responsibility that, unfortunately, not everyone is geared to accept and manage responsibly.

One message that is often lost in the constant stream of messages and influences, is that every individual still has the right and the ability to make their own decisions, to formulate their own opinions and to do exactly that which works for you. No, you do not HAVE to go and buy that contour kit and you do NOT have to get that highlighter, you CAN and HAVE to do exactly that which you can afford and what makes you feel beautiful.

There is no one single way to do makeup and there is not one single product that is holy grail and something that cannot be ignored. You are an individual, with a unique skin, unique chemical balance and every product will be yours uniquely. Be you. Do not be afraid to do what makes you happy, even if that means that you stand alone and go against the word of your favourite influencers.

Be yourself.

Cosmetics, makeup and fashion is a deeply personal expression of self.

It is in your control to be you yourself.
